I have recently joked about the long list of fake excuses that the power company has when the hydro goes out to cover their ass for something stupid they did. The last few days the power has gone out numerous times and the reason has been some salty fog. Sounds funny eh? Well there is an article in the Herald today all about the excuses that the power company has used in the past.

Lights out? It’s probably just the crows
Power company has some colourful explanations for outages across N.S.

Whether it’s nesting crows, marching gays or salty sea spray, Nova Scotia Power customers can count on the company to dish out a colourful explanation for why the lights went out.

In April 2005, Cole Harbour residents were told that a family of crows building a nest at the Dartmouth East substation caused an outage affecting more than 200 homes.

Three months later, the company blamed a loss of power in Halifax on streamers from the annual gay pride parade coming into contact with power lines along the route.

Salt contamination is being blamed for the most recent outages. A series of brief but bothersome interruptions knocked out traffic lights and electricity to homes in Halifax, Eastern Passage and Cow Bay on Wednesday and Thursday.

(full story)

So when the intern or some union dead weight backs into a generator or runs over a cable it is good to know the power company has it’s ass covered with some creative thinking. I wonder if it is a job to come up with the ideas to sell to the public when the lights go out??

Here are some more if they happen to be reading:

  • Flying monkeys landing on the lines
  • Someone knocked over a post with their ATV
  • Gambling, yes this is a good one
  • The Rolling Stones did it
  • Hard to explain but I think it had something to do with the Rotary
  • Crocs somehow are shutting down power lines
  • Peter MacKay called the power company a name
  • Terrorism, oh I bet they have almost used that one
  • Too much wind even though the energy minister claims the wind may stop one day
  • Sunday shopping has overloaded the grid and therefore rolling blackouts are in order

Okay that should be good enough to get Nova Scotia hydro through the winter.
