Sam Mitchell should be fired?
It is a question we have seen in many publications over the last few weeks. And the answer is a resounding yes!!
The young Raptors need a teacher. A George Karl-type coach who the players can look up to. Not somebody who calls out his players to the media after games.
Mitchell has had the Raps looking good at times, but he is not out on the floor, and these guys are pros, so they have to play well sometimes, right?
He’d be OK on a team full of veterans who know that he is calling them out to motivate them. But young players these days just aren’t built to handle such criticism. They are spoon fed superstars.
Also, everybody and their mother wants to be a part of an organization where the boss’ name is Colangelo. Don’t think that if Mitchell gets canned that coaches won’t be lining up to take the reigns in Toronto, because they will. NBA veteran coaches, college coaches and some NBA assistants on the rise will be chomping at the bit to come to Canada and bring this team to the next level.
Mitchell is in the last year of his contract and if he isn’t fired before season’s end, he definitely won’t be back for another kick at the can.
Lastly, with the addition of TJ Ford, the Raps finally got a true point guard they have lacked since their existence (Stoudamire doesn’t count, he was shoot first). Mitchell has never had a point guard as good as Ford, and has been substituting him at awkward times. At Texas, Ford was one of the best players in the country, and because of his quickness, is prone to turnovers. The key with a player like this is to let him play out his mistakes by leaving him out there until he dishes a few dimes and regains some confidence.
