Hi can I get two season tickets for the Raptors please.
As if I needed more ammo to hate the Toronto Maple Leafs. Maybe some die hard fans of Leafs Nation will start hopping over to the Raptors after this news?
The price of being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan continues to go up, both for fans and broadcasters. After Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment raised ticket prices this month, the company is now planning to put as many as 20 Leaf games on its digital channel – an increase of up to eight over last season.
While those without digital TV boxes will have to pay $4.49 a month or $99 up front to watch those 20 Leafs games, that price tag pales in comparison to what broadcasters will ante up for the right to carry them.
According to sources, Leafs regional rights will cost Rogers Sportsnet and TSN about $700,000 a game – a 57 per cent increase over the $450,000 rights fee in the last deal.
Now I am not a fan of the team but I would have to say if I was this news would bother me. They do not put a good product on the ice while keeping a giant sock of cash hidden away. They are supposed to be one of the most storied franchises in sports and they have not won jack in 40 years.
So to reward their loyal fan base they are going to take more games away. It is already near impossible to get into a Leafs game without spending your life savings so now even the chance to watch the games on an overpriced cable system is leaving.
Are you willing to shell out the cash for Leafs TV just to see 24 hr a day Leafs? Who knows what will happen but I kind of have a feeling everyone will just like lemmings off a cliff.
That will be the downfall of the Maple Leafs for the history of time. Fans don’t care what they are going to see as long as they have blue and white on the jerseys.
