Many of you have probably heard of Takeru Kobayashi. He’s the Japanese competitive eater that seemingly holds every imaginable eating record. His most famous record, however is probably in the sport of hot dog consumption. Last year he broke his own record of 49 hot dogs by eating 53 3/4 hot dogs during the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4. Kobayashi’s reign over the hot dog kingdom, however is no more.
His record was smashed yesterday when Joey “Jaws” Chestnut consumed a whopping 59 1/2 hot dogs in 12 minutes during the Southwest Regional qualifier for the Nathan’s Contest in Arizona.
Now I have eaten four or maybe five on occasion in my life and I was pretty much done. I can’t imagine sucking back over 50. That is crazy!!
On average, a package containing 10 franks contains about 110 calories per regular-size frank. Add another 75 calories if the franks are jumbo-size.
Most hot dog buns contain 80 to 130 calories, depending on the size and brand of the hot dog bun. Some light versions may contain much less calories - as low as 45 calories per bun.
Based on the above, the average hot dog will cost you about 250 calories. The calories are good - as calories goes, but the fat content is out of the ball park.
So lets see, that is 59 1/2 dogs at 250 calories. Hmmm that is just under 15000 calories in 12 minutes. Yep that seems healthy.
Enjoy your next hot dog one and all.
