Last night after enjoying a long day of backyard lounging and Live Earth watching we did our part to help the environment and walked down to the Oxford to see Sicko. I have been looking forward to this film ever since I saw the commercial and it did not disappoint.
I know Michael Moore movies are a little on the bias side but generally his facts are right on the money so keeping that in mind I won’t say I bought into everything 100%. But…………..even if a small part of this movie were true (which I think most of it is) I can say I left the theatre, angry, disgusted, shocked and yes, sick.
Not because it was gross or hard to watch or even boring……….I left feeling that way because even I had no idea how bad it is to live in the United States. The system down there is horrible, they are killing their own people and making millions doing so. The examples are endless and it really needs to be seen but basically Moore compares the U.S. system with many other countries and in the end shows that the American way……..is pretty much the worst way.
Everyday citizens getting denied health care because they are too tall or too fat or once had a yeast infection. Jeeez. I won’t go on because you need to go see it and be shocked for yourself but I am just thankful my life has not been destroyed because I can’t get the medical help I need.
Now I know Canada, Britain and France are not perfect either and we have many other issues but at least if we get sick or hurt it does not force us to sell our house just for the chance to maybe get better again.
I worry about my friends who live down there, I think how awful life would of been if my dad’s recent heart surgery had to of been done in the U.S. I even am glad I did not see this movie before we drove to Boston because as a Canadian I did not even think to get some travel insurance in case we had a problem.
Moore’s movie should make American people want to revolt, to fight back against corporation and government for stealing their money, forcing them into debt and basically beating them down for years and years. I can’t even imagine the stories that were not shown, I bet they would of had the theatre in tears.
The movie has the classic Moore style, with laughs and very simple ways of getting the horrid facts across. I know people don’t like him and they don’t take his stuff as serious as they should but this film once again makes you wonder why the U.S.A. is considered a free country at all.
I am quite happy to pay higher taxes if it means I don’t have to choose between selling my house and getting health care I deserve.
My only wish would be that this movie will get the street cred like Al Gore’s movie got. It is just as important I think for Americans to see, to think about and to take action. I still feel sick even thinking about it.
