Hey all, just got back a short while ago from seeing Transformers. Before I get to the movie let me just mention some of the previews. We all know about the Simpsons movie but I saw a clip that might sell me on seeing it. You all will know it as Spider Pig. Homer singing the classic Spiderman song but instead talking about his pet pig that he has walking on the ceiling. That is worth the 10 bucks right there if you ask me. Another trailer that was shown was J.J Abrams’ next project and I always get excited for those (excuse Life About Brian). It was a killer trailer and in the end it did not even have a title yet, talk about a true teaser! All I know is I was ready to run back out to the lobby and pay to see more. It was one good looking two minutes of movie. After further googling this is what I found out.
IMDB says the movie revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people. That little blurb does not do the footage justice. It was of a party and suddenly shit starts blowing up and buildings are getting destroyed. It looked very real and it did not show what was making the racket. It made you think of King Kong or Godzilla. Hell for all we know it is the polar bear from Lost. One thing about J.J. he is always reinventing old ideas and turning them into gold.
Okay back to the feature movie directed by good ol’ shit destroying, patriotic and trying to be funny Michael Bay. The movie kicked off with some Transformers history and introducing the main human characters. We meet Sam who is the classic outcast at school wanting to score with the hot chick, Mikaela. By the way, Megan Fox who plays Mikaela is the one who puts the form in Transformers. I could not stop looking at the extremely white teeth and the shiny, tanned skin. Did they spritz her between takes cause no girl sweats like that and still looks good.
Slowly the Transformers are brought to the movie and soon enough the cat is out of the bag and everyone knows there are there. All the popular characters were there from the cartoon and it was very cool that Optimus Prime had the same voice. The actual transformer was awesome and I don’t think it could of been done better. Starscream flying around going from jet to robot and back was seamless and very cool.
As with other Michael Bay movies he tries to make everyone very funny and full of sarcasm. That is all fine and good but you can’t have it coming from too many people or it is overkill. Shia and Bernie Mac got away with it, it fit with their character but John Turturro was WAY TOO MUCH. What a waste of a solid actor giving him awful writing. He is the type of guy that you just let act and call it a day. I am aslo wondering if Jon Voight has a deal to be in all of Michael Bay’s movies??
I liked the movie, the transformers were cool and my senses were blown away by the sights and sounds of the movie. I think the only drawback was I did not have that wow factor that I came out of Die Hard with. I saw it a few weeks ago and I think it grabbed my mindless summer attention first and it a way diminished my liking of Transformers. Kind of like building up your tolerance of action movies I guess.
There were a lot of cheesy moments and lines but hey what can you expect. The cartoon was cheese as well but I loved it. I did not like that the Autobots always won but that is just the way it is. If you loved the cartoon this movie won’t let you down. There is enough of the old mixed with the new to keep everyone happy. I will say I was let down when Megatron did not transform into a giant gun and blow something up although it was classic to hear him bitch out Starscream!
Kind of a letdown to walk back to the parking lot, looking at the Malibu and thinking it is just a boring old car.
