Dozens of residents of a Winnipeg neighbourhood were evacuated from their homes Monday night after a bizarre oil leak caused manhole covers to fly into the air.
Just before 7 p.m., two barrels filled with oil and gas behind an auto body shop tipped over and ignited, causing an explosion that shook several nearby homes. Oil also leaked into the sewer system, where a buildup of pressure from the vapours caused manhole covers to pop off.
Area resident Darrel Hill said he saw a manhole cover fly 10 feet in the air, followed by a plume of black smoke reaching into the trees.
No one was hurt and residents were allowed to return to their homes about three hours later.
