Day 5 was full of bittersweet feelings for most of us. It was the last day at the resort before heading home and back to the daily grind. As much as I was sad it was over, there is always excitement about getting home and back to life. For Katie and I this would be a long, long day before we saw Halifax but we made the most of it and survived with smiles on our faces.
It started early once again because all the girls wanted to meet for coffee to say their goodbyes (cry) before Peggy went horseback riding. Check out was at 11am so they had plenty of time to hug and wish each other the best before we all went our own ways.
Jesse and Kate were up after a good sleep in the tent and they started to tear down before the hotel saw what they did. I still think that is so funny that they slept out there. Kate, Jesse and I went around to get a coffee and waited for Katie to return. We hung out and chatted and then the Rock kids fully reunited by calling Jackson on the phone. What a close family those guys are.
More hugs and goodbyes as everyone packed up the cars and one by one headed off to Calgary. So long Kicking Horse, I hope to come back one day and enjoy all it offered once again. Jesse and Kate were off to Jasper to continue the trip and Ruth, Katie and I made our way to Banff.
I dozed in the car as the girls rehashed the week and after not too long we were in Banff to do a car swap. Ruth stayed to meet up with her guy and we took over the car and headed on to Calgary. We had several hours til our flight so there was no hurry at all.
We stopped at a McDonalds and fueled up the belly before I drove the rest of the way while Katie dozed. Once in Calgary we toured around checking out the city and found it to be pretty empty. We took pictures and Katie got a hot chocolate. We drove over to the Red Mile and had a great dinner at The Melrose Café. The Mojitos had so much mint in them, they were delicious and refreshing.
Finally we knew it was time to make our way to the airport and take the car back. This is where we had a bit of an Amazing Race adventure and for the most part we did well. Getting around Calgary was a little hairy due to some crazy drivers on the road but we finally got on the right highway to the airport.
We had to fill the car up before returning it and that was the hairy part. We could not figure out how to get over to the Husky station and finally after two trips around the airport and a detour on the highway we got gas. Then we could not find the right place to return the car and once we just left it and went into the office there were about eight attendants just sitting there. Katie did everything in her power not to destroy them right then and there. The counter guy did well in defusing the situation with a joke and all was well.
We made our plane on time and took the red eye home to Halifax. I did not sleep to well since I don’t fit in the seats and my TV did not work in front of me. It was glowing in my face all night, not able to do anything to it. We landed, found the friendly face of the Malibu and drove home.
What a week, what a trip, what memories. A Golden vacation is the only way to describe the last five days.
