Well I got sucked into it last night, we were going to watch Damages but as I flipped around the channels I caught the preshow for the MTV Awards and the rest is history. They were all going on about how they all wanted to see Britney Spears take the stage and I have to admit I got pulled in as if they were going to air a live train wreck.
Funny enough they did. Katie and I sat through the painful and sometimes awkward preshow just to get to the big opening act that could of been really good or really bad. You all know how it went. Spears looked like a whale lost in the ocean of her own discontent up there on stage. She was not singing, she was not dancing and she was not even looking like she wanted to be there. So why was she?? I’m sure MTV used her for their own doing by sucking in as many people as possible for the start of the show but generally when you promise a large opener, you give us something draw-dropping.
This performance was almost worth being the opening to SNL, not MTV. They showed cutaways of other big stars smiling or even laughing and I wish we could know what they were thinking as Britney moved slowly around the stage. Katie watched with embarrassment more than anything and I was just amazed she did not even try to lip sync as I am sure she knows how to do well.
Once the shock and horror ended it did not get any better when Sarah Silverman came up with full guns blazing. I mean I can’t get to surprised. What did MTV think would happen, they have seen her act and then you offer up Spears right before it, talk about lamb to the slaughter.
The party rooms were cool and I would of preferred to watch those all night. JT and Dave Grohl were refreshing and entertaining and the whole Kanye-50 Cent thing was hilarious. All in all I ended up watching the whole show and I did see some good performances whether there was actual singing involved or not. But the only thing I will take away from the experience is Brit walking around like a washed up lounge act trying to make enough cash to take the bus home afterwards. Sad, sad, sad.
Here is the performance in case you missed it.
