Last night we decided to go out for dinner and a movie and origionally the plan was to see In the Valley of Elah but Katie did not feel like seeing a sad movie so we instead went to see The Kingdom. Even the dinner plans changed at the last minute from Boston Pizza out in Bayers Lake to the Thirsty Duck downtown. This was simply because it was opening night for The Kingdom and we figured it would be less crowded downtown.

We hit the Duck around 7pm and it was a good meal. We stretched it as best we could since the movie was at 9:30pm and I am pretty sure we both left very full. I had a burger and fries with a few beers and Katie had this pork sandwich and salad.

It was definetly a classic fall night in Halifax. A lot of students out on the street going somewhere or hanging out at the Starbucks. That is where we went after dinner so Katie could get a hot chocolate. We sat in there for a bit and then made our way to Park Lane mall.

Katie was a rebel and brought her outside drink in without a hassle and as we always do, we were in our seats a good 25 minutes early. Thank god cause there was a preshow of movie clips and interviews.

Of course just as the trailers were going to get going a bunch of people came in together and seemed shocked they could not all sit together. Does anyone ever think, hey it may be busy I think we should go early? Hell we do that when there is just two of us.

So this mass group of people ended up sitting around us in every way but the front. They then had to chatter and get all comfy and take care of their phones and all that loud stuff as the trailers were going. Whatever it is the trailers, I can deal with that although I would prefer quiet. The dude next to me brought in an entire store and had to arrange his stuff for maximum emjoyment. The best part was when he ate an Ice Cap from Tim’s with his straw instead of sucking it through the straw. It was great.

The movie was pretty good and what I expected. It took a look at a small part of the big picture of what is going on in the Middle East. What I took from it was just how much tension and confusion and political BS there is over there. If that is really what happens when the FBI/Americans try to figure out an attack or crime I am not shocked years have passed.

I liked how the cast added a little bit of everything into the mix. A lot of moments of humour mixed in with all the violence and tension. It was nice to see Jennifer Garner back with a weapon and going all Sydney Bristow on someone’s ass. Jason Bateman and Chris Cooper can be very funny in the dryest of ways and of course Jamie Foxx was the big star doing his dramatic/comedic thing.

The film was very well done in my opinion, with the only thing lacking was more in-depth character development of those 4 people going into Saudi Arabia. I can understand that the focus was not supposed to be only on these characters, but I would have liked to know more about them Even more about Jeremy Piven’s character would of been good. Setting that aside, this is a film that I would watch again to see if it had the same effect on me the second time through, but for now I find The Kingdom to be a well crafted film that is well worth seeing in theaters.

The movie ended around 11:30pm and we were on our way home. Pretty sleepy after the beer and movie and it was not long before I konked out.

I did see that PBS Detroit shows The Newsroom, wow I forgot how great that show was on CBC many years ago.

Okay time for breakfast!
