The days are getting cooler in the morning and that can only mean one thing. It was time to call the oil man. Katie and I dread this day as I am sure most Nova Scotians do as well. You can hear the trucks driving all over the city as the drivers hum with glee as they know it is time for everyone to cough up the cash to keep warm.

This has been a new experience for Katie and I over the last few years as we are from Ontario where most places are heated with natural gas. Out east the only way to go for most of us is to fill up the giant tank that sits outside the house that will suck the bank account dry.

I still have not figured that whole thing out. How there can be so many companies and so many different prices for the same golden oil. Yesterday when the truck came we got the tank filled and the final total was higher than it has ever been. Why? Well from what I can tell they actually filled the tank this time. I guess all those other times they were not filling it all the way so we would have to call more often and probably in the long run pay more money.

It is right up there with the price of gas that seems so unfair. I think it is even more evil on the government’s part because this is all about keeping warm and this province has a lot of people who have to choose between eating or keeping warm. I feel lucky that we can afford (barely) to keep the oil tank pumping but I can only imagine how hard it must be for some families.

I have gotten better at recovering from the sting when that little white slip is left in the mail box but it will never truly go away. I can now somehow talk my mind into feeling okay about paying a large chunk of my income to keep warm.

I guess I should be thankful that it is not winter all year round, now that would suck for so many reasons.

Hope we don’t see you for awhile oil man, nothing personal we just don’t like seeing you pull up.
