Last night Katie and I walked down the road to the Oxford to see Across the Universe, the Beatles inspired musical by Julie Taymor.

Before I get into my review I am going to comment on the same thing I seem to comment on when I go to any movie these days. People are down right annoying and borderline rude. When I say people I mean kids. Teenagers just don’t know how to keep quiet and it is so frustrating when you are at a movie trying to be in the moment.

They always come in as packs of 10 and are snickering and talking and making a hell of a scene just to sit down. As you know because of me, we always get to a movie pretty early and we always like to sit away from people. So it is very annoying to do this and just as trailers are running a pack of kids will sit in front of you or behind you and it makes you miss the first few minutes because you are so irritated. Katie even had to say something last night.

I am sure it has a lot to do with our age and the fact that we have less tolerance for that but come on. How hard is it to go to a movie, sit down and shut up.

Okay rant over.

Back to the movie. I am going to point form it just because it is early on a Sunday and I am not feeling very alive yet.

  • Would of liked it better if we had not been listening to the soundtrack for three weeks.
  • Roughly 30 minutes too long for my taste.
  • Eddie Izzard and Bono were good.
  • I really liked the style and look of the movie. Some of the scenes were down right trippy.
  • The story was too slow for me. It was a little hard to figure out where they were going with the narrative in some parts.
  • I found the landlord singer a little grating after awhile.

Overall for a musical it was pretty good. That is normally something I avoid watching but I think it was the music that had me hooked when I first saw the trailer.

I did find myself dreaming of a similar movie being made in the future using all the music from the Rolling Stones. That would be awesome to see but as I said to Katie, Mick Jagger would probably want to star in it himself.
