The remnants of Hurricane Noel brought heavy rain Saturday to parts of Atlantic Canada where residents are bracing for strong winds, high surf and potential widespread electrical outages.
People struggle to walk in high winds at Nauset Beach in Eastham, Mass., as the remnants of Hurricane Noel churns the sea on Saturday. People struggle to walk in high winds at Nauset Beach in Eastham, Mass., as the remnants of Hurricane Noel churns the sea on Saturday.
The storm is heading north to the region after cutting a swath through the Caribbean, where it left more than 100 people dead and caused tens of millions of dollars in damage.
Here is my live take on this nasty dude called Noel.
If you are bunkered down because of the weather and have power, we would love to hear from you.
7:45pm: Drove to work in some pretty crazy rain and wind, nothing that bad.
9:00pm: Wind really picked up and the rain was blowing almost sideways.
10:26pm: Watching the Weather channel live Noel watch. Things are getting pretty windy now. The power may go out at work but we have a backup generator.
10:42pm: Made a tea while the power is still on and back to work. TWN is saying the Noel is PACKING a PUNCH! Parts of NB and NS are already without power so who knows if it will hit Halifax.
11:00pm: Took a look outside, it feels like the calm before the storm at the moment. The rain is coming down hard but there is not a lot of wind at the moment. Stay tuned, this thing is going to get going anytime now.
11:03pm: Oh there is the wind! I can hear it through the thick windows here at work. TWN just said the gusts are 140kms in some areas.
11:28pm: It sounds like an old-fashioned kettle boiling outside right now. I wonder if the power is out back home? Katie has not checked in for a bit.
11:35pm: The Moncton feed just went out on TWN. I wonder if the city is still there?
12:49am: All quiet on the East coast front. Just rain and wind so far.
1:38am: Just went and looked out the window at the lake by work and the trees are bent over pretty good from the wind. It looks pretty messy out there. Here comes the time change! Booooo.
1:18am: Yes that is right I went back in time. Still raining, still windy but nothing major. I am almost a little letdown. Where is this big storm??
2:33am: I can still hear the wind but so far it does not seem to be that bad. I wonder if the rest of Halifax is still there? Hard to tell out her in Bayers like in the middle of the night. The rain reminds me of a day Katie and I went shopping out here, yah that was the last straw before we bought a car. No bus for us when the rain is a pain.
2:54am: Wow the wind is really whipping now. I just heard it and had to go take a look at the trees. They are sideways almost and I think I am hearing thunder now. Maybe the storm of storms is finally here. Stay tuned.
3:35am: Wind is still howling and the cable has been flickering on and off. That is all I got from ground zero in the middle of the morning. I so wish I knew what was going on out there.
4:05am: The power is starting to flicker. Seeing as it is hard to blog without hydro I may have to fill you in on the rest later on. Don’t worry I will take copious notes. Wish me luck when the lights go boom.
5:05am: I think the storm is at its peak. The rain is thick and almost like snow and is blowing sideways. Trees are bent over and wishing they could run for cover. Noel you humble us. Please don’t blow the roof away.
5:35am: Things seem to be calming down outside. Oh sure it is still raining like a mo fo but the howling wind seems to of vanished. Maybe Noel just got tired of making all that noise. I can’t wait for daylight. It is supposed to be 16 Celcius and sunny all day.
6:04am: A new Linkon Park video is on TV and all is well in the Fax. We seem to be out of the woods. I can only speak for out here at work but things seem fine. I wonder how the rest of the city managed. Who knew working all night could be this interesting. Only 9 hours til the Raptors game. I will need a nap.
6:10am: Had a call in. I guess the power is out in parts of the city. What a night to lose track of time. Clocks going out plus time change must screw some people up. I think the worst is over. I am going to call it a post and move on to better things.
