Celine Dion

For those of you who don’t know, Celine Dion is making her way to Halifax. She will be live and in person belting out her songs in the summer of 2008. You are probably wondering, is it at the Casino? Maybe at the Metro Center? Nope, she will be playing on the Commons just like Mick and the Boys did last year.

Just picture it, 50, 000 people sitting on the ground, becoming one with the earth and raising their lighters high for one more song.

Oh wait, that won’t be the case because the fan base for Celine Dion does not sit on the ground for hours and wear a poncho if it is raining.

Here is the problem with the booking of this concert. While Mayor Peter Kelly is as happy as can collectors on recycling day, he can’t really think Celine Dion will make the city a pile of cash.

I read that for the concert just to break even they need 40, 000 people to go. That seems like a lot of work just to break even. Will people travel from great distances just to pay inflated prices to listen to Celine sing a handful of songs?

Who can they get as an opening act that will want to be involved or even match Celine’s genre of music?

The Rolling Stones concert was a once in a lifetime experience. They are a legendary rock band that everyone can appreciate on some level. They are a band born to play large outdoor concerts.

Celine Dion? Not so much.

So I ask the city of Halifax, are you going to go to this thing? I mean I know my parents would if they were in town but my Mum would not be keen on getting frisked and going to the bathroom in a dirty porta-potty.

We shall see. I just hope she sings her Air Canada song so I can sit in my backyard and hum along.
