I was going to save this new column for Cuzoogle’s comment king, Steve. But today I was so annoyed at what I saw on TV I had to fire up the rant post.
As most of us know last week Sean Taylor of the Washington Redskins was killed. A tragic story that has been talked about and covered in the sports media pretty extensively over the past several days. I understand the need to get reactions from players and members of the sport and I can even handle around the clock coverage on ESPN about every little detail that pertains to it.
What I can’t stand is what I saw today. Today on ESPN News (hours and hours) they covered the funeral live. Who covers a funeral live unless it is a Royal member, a President or even John Lennon?
There above a giant and tacky sports ticker full of stats and news was a funeral. Fonts and graphics over speakers and people in attendance.
We put it on for about five seconds and felt dirty and turned it. What a disgrace. I thought only CNN stooped so low. Give the family and team members some god damn privacy.
ESPN, you did not know him, you most likely did not give him five seconds of air time in his career. So why do you send your team down there to cover it like you were best friends. It is insulting.
Do you think your average sports fan is sitting at home watching it live and feeling like they were there? No you are using the whole situation for your own content and eyeballs.
Shame on you ESPN and whoever decided to do this.
Leave it alone and waste our mornings with your other crappy shows and opinions.

They don’t even know how many teams there are in the NHL, let alone know how to respect an athlete. TSN is the only sports network for me (even though it is apart of ESPN, they still know their stuff)
That’s the problem with 24/7 cable stations. They have to fill the slots somehow. But if the funeral had been held on Saturday during the heart of college football season, do you think it merit start to finish coverage?
And maybe the average sports fan isn’t sitting at home watching and feeling like it they were there, but are they so different from the readers and viewers who gobble up the latest dirt in Lohan/Spears/Hilton?
Good point Ron, I do try to keep my mind from wasting any time on the likes of Lohan/Spears/Hilton.
Well said. If you listen to ESPN radio you would have been just as dissapointed.
People saying the Sean Taylor’s life caused Sean Taylor’s death. Blowing hard about how you reap what you sow.
24 hours later we come to find out the killers didn’t know he would be home and were there to steal stuff and not settle some street injustice.
The next time they show some perspective in exchange for sensationalism will be the first.
