The Patriots must go undefeated this year
by Stephen Leggett
I can’t stand the Patriots at all. They are a great team, but they are one of the most unlikable dynasties in sports history. They are just better than every other organization in the league. But as much as I hate the Patriots, the team I hate most is the Dolphins, and this year is a year to put the Dolphins to sleep for good.
In 1972 the Miami Dolphins did something that no other NFL team has been able to do. They had an undefeated season and went 17-0. Sadly, this has been something that the Dolphins and their following have been able to hold over the heads of all other teams and their supporters.
This week the Patriots have the biggest test they will face for the rest of the regular season. Bill Belichick and his band of merry men are off to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers on Sunday afternoon. The (9-3) Steelers have been an up and down team this season, but winning in Pittsburgh has been tough for many teams, even great ones. One thing is sure, the last three games on the Pats schedule will not be where a loss shows up. After the Steelers, the Patriots play the Jets, go to the Giants and the real cherry on the sundae the winless Dolphins.
The only thing as special in the NFL as an undefeated season is a winless season. Since the merger in 1970 only the 1976 Tampa Bay Bucs have gone winless.
Every year when the last NFL team without a loss loses, the nobody’s from the ’72 Dolphins team are seen jumping around, popping champagne celebrating their place as the only undefeated team in league history. This must end and if Tom Brady and his Pats have to do it then so be it. It’s perfect. The Pats will get to beat the Dolphins twice and have a hand in making them the new standard all poor teams are held up against. Paybacks a bitch Shula.
Now most of us remember back to week 1. That was when Belichick and his team were caught filming the Jets signals. The league fined Belichick $500,000 and docked them a first round pick in the next NFL draft. Look how well that turned out.
Even without their own first round pick, the Patriots will still have the 49ers first round pick in the upcoming draft. Yes, the Patriots will be drafting in the top 5 in April. And as for Belichick’s fine. Within a week of his fine being announced, he received a contract extension from the Patriots. I wonder if the total value of that contract was increased by half a million dollars? They are just better than everyone at all aspects of running a franchise.
Now let’s just hope that the 2007 Dolphins finish what they started and close out the winless season and cap off the most magical season in my life.
