Phil Jackson has been given a new $24 Million – 2 Year contract.

Holy God, why would anyone pay that kind of money for a coach? The swami has become, far and away, the most expensive coach in major sports while directing his team to becoming an afterthought in the western conference since his return.

Truth be told, the NBA is a strange league. There are many examples of horrible contracts for little to no production. Denver will pay Nene over $50 Million over the next 4 years for multiple DL stints. The Raps paid Alonzo Mourning millions while he helped the Heat win a championship. Stephon Marbury makes more than $20 Million a year and contributes nothing to his team other than the prosecutions exhibits A – L. These may be mistakes, but a coach at $12 Million a year is simply insane.

Sure Phil has as many championships as any coach in history. His teams have been some of the best within their respective eras. But to think that Phil was a key portion of that success is laughable. His last stint with the Lakers included Shaq and Kobe. Two of the top 5 players in the league. Great job at rolling the ball out at practice and telling everyone to get out of the way when Shaq and Kobe have the ball.

Before his style of yoga led the Lakers to a few championships he was with the Bulls and did a great job of carrying Michael Jordan’s bags. Does anyone feel that Chicago and the Bulls won because some timeout Phil called? Do you think Phil had anything to do with no official ever calling a foul on MJ? Me either, but Dr. Jerry Buss seems sure of it. He signed Phil to this monster contract. Hell, Phil is even dating his daughter. That is what I call scoreboard.

Why should I be surprised. This is Hollywood. It’s the land of plastic people and bodies. Everything costs more in the wacky west. They elected Kindergarten Cop as Governor. It clearly is a world that is different than any other. They say that stars are needed to make an impact in the city of Angels. Or maybe The NBA’s original swami, Patrick Ewing, had it right when he told us “We may make a lot of money, but we spend a lot of money.”
