Last night I watched the series finale of Extras and I am still breaking it down in my head almost a day later. I loved it but it was one of those pieces of work that lingers with you as you remember each moment in the story.
In classic Office format you go in thinking it will be a lot of laughs and you come out focused on the human elements of the story. Sure there were many, many laughs but for the most part the show was full of squirm in your seat, awkward and dark moments. I think that is why I enjoy Gervais/Merchant productions so much. They are the best at mixing comedy with the darker side of life and sometimes can even make you feel dirty for watching what they do.
They make you feel like you are stuck watching a couple break up or you are watching an older person yelling at the check out girl at the store. Those really awkward moments in life that you know you should not watch but you can’t keep your eyes off.
The show was the right amount of comedy, real life commentary and a feel good factor at the end. I won’t go into details but there is certainly a moment when all of the audience must of felt some kind of emotion for the two main characters.
As always the guest stars were amazing. Clive Owen nailed his bit as best as any “extra” ever on the show.
George Michael in the park was brilliant and the cast of Big Brother in the end were actually real life fringe celebs in Britain.
Just like they did with David Brent, they made you hate Andy just enough but you still really felt sorry for him.
I can’t wait for future projects from this team and I did read they are going to work on a movie next.
If you have not watched Extras yet, do yourself a favour and go out and rent it tonight.
