Hi all just wanted to update everyone who may be following the job hunting situation.
There is no news to report but that does not mean there is nothing going on. Every day for about an hour I am surfing job posts and sending out resumes. Now not all of them are what I would call ideal jobs but you can’t be that picky.
I am waiting on a few posts to close that I am very excited about. They are jobs I know I could do and do well if given the chance.
It is a process, some days are better than others but it is certainly going a lot better than that job hunt of 2005.
This time around I am better prepared and set for scouting out a new job. Before I was not only looking for work, I was getting used to living in a new city and getting used to living with Katie.
It has been just over five weeks since the layoff and it has gone by very fast.
There are a few things going against me as I hunt for employment, at least in Halifax.
This city is not exactly the best place for someone with my background or skills. There are not many media jobs and there are a high number of people looking for them.
Just recently The Daily News closed shop and let go 92 people. Global television is closing in the next few months and that will add even more people to the unemployment line.
Where are all these people going to work if they want to stay in Halifax and in the industry? I don’t really know because since I have been living here, it feels like the city is shrinking and not actually growing.
The rest of Canada seems to be moving ahead but more and more Atlantic Canada is getting left behind.
It is the age old problem for the people who grow up here and love living here. There are no jobs to keep people here.
Now I still have faith that I will find something and I do have some freedom to wait and hunt for a job I like. But it is going to be all about luck and being ready for a posting that pops up.
I have a few leads out there for some freelance work but that is not until more into March.
I am very glad to have this blog and of course the Chocolate Dog Blog to keep me busy and unlike two years ago, the blogs are doing more than just filling time. There is some money coming in from them and it has built up over time to be a bit of an emergency fund. Always nice to know it is there.
Another thing going against me in the hunt is the time of year. The early winter is not the greatest time to be looking for work. There is not a lot of hiring going on and in this province there are a lot more jobs when the weather is nice. Not to mention have to get around for interview in some nasty weather. I am looking forward to the warmer weather that is for sure.
So I will continue to look at posts, keep in touch with a few contacts and be ready for a post that may come tomorrow.
It is a funny trip. One day it can seem like nothing is going to come along but then it only takes a post or two on the job board to get the excitement flowing again.
I have too much experience and skills to offer not to find something soon. I know that I am not the only one in the same boat and that can be a comfort and a challenge since they are the same people fighting for the same jobs.
So I will continue to keep Bosco exercised, the house tidy, the blog full of new content and most importantly myself thinking positive and knowing I am doing the best I can.
It is all about catching a break and I can feel my time is coming very soon.
Keep in touch and check back now and then to see how my search continues.
