If you live in Canada I am sure you have seen the commercials for the President’s Choice Blue Menu en Papillote frozen dinners. They look very fancy and steamy on the ads but how do they actually measure up? Well on Kline Street we are always a sucker for a new PC product so we picked up a few and had them for dinner last night.

This is how they are described on the PC website for the chicken al pomodoro kind. Katie had the lemon & herb salmon in case you are keeping score at home.

Another PC FIRST! We updated the traditional French method of parchment cooking in this delicious entreé, featuring seasoned chicken breast and vegetables in tomato sauce, all sealed in a parchment packet. Only 7 minutes in the microwave steams them to create an intense fusion of flavours with little added fat.

First off I was expecting real or at least real looking parchment paper. But when I took them out of the box they looked like they were in any old paper wrapping. The “this side up” markings really added to the french style as well.

Okay so they did not look like what I expected but how did they taste. We cooked them in the oven for the 50-60 minutes is describes and then it was time for the moment of truth.

The smell was filtering through the house so that was a good sign and we were really hungry at this point. An hour to cook this little package of food seems a bit much for me but whatever. Katie claims food like that tastes better out of the oven over the microwave.

I popped open the sealed packages and the steam came pouring out and inside was the cooked food. Looked okay.

As I was bringing them in to Katie I did not see any of the fancy french flare that the commercial created. It was two bags of food.

Here are our final verdicts after we finished.

Katie

  • Like airplane food.
  • The French would laugh at this.
  • Next time would just pour it all in a bowl.
  • Not a lot of actual salmon.

Michael

  • W ould of been better with pasta added.
  • Rubbery chicken.
  • Did like the easy clean up.
  • Super small portion.

Later on in the evening we had some microwave popcorn and could not help laughing that basically it was the same as our dinner. Kernals en papilotte cooked in fancy microwave popcorn bag.

This new product from PC we agreed was an ideal dinner for Katie on nights she is eating by herself. The right amount of food, easy to make and she gets to enjoy some seafood.
