I love this tournament.

It probably doesn’t bode well for my future romantic prospects, but I love it so much that it actually makes me sad sometimes, because it’s just so ridiculous.

I love everything about it, from the timeless, mindless clichés to the unpredictable and unthinkable, which arrive right on time every year. I love the buzzer beaters and bad suits. I love overweight Moms and teardrops beading on hardwood. I love stunned cheerleaders.

These are all among my favourite memories, and yet the thing I love the most, better than all of that, is the characters.

It’s the kids (I can call them that, now that I can no longer be one of them). The faces, the haircuts and above all else the names that make each and every Big Dance memorable.

In fact it was that love of monikers (and my mother’s habit of picking based on them) that led me to do a list of some of the tournament’s best titles last year. Now 12 months later, it’s back by popular demand.

Keeping in mind last year’s list I’ve decided to avoid any overlap. In all fairness to myself, that does take a few good ones off the board, but come on, this is March Madness. The only limits are imaginary.

And of course I can’t overstate my intentions here: I’m not making fun of anyone. It’s all for the love of the name.
