Every Wednesday Cuzoogle will feature The Seven which is a list of whatever we feel like. Submit your seven on whatever theme you want today and it will be posted in the coming weeks.

I watch a lot of sports and I have to say I am tired of the cliches that the media and athletes spew every day. Sometimes it is funny when you know athletes are saying it just because they don’t want to make a real comment but in general they are overused.

Here are seven that need to go away for good.

  1. “You can’t say enough about him”
Real meaning: “I’ve already said as much as I know about him, and repeated it many times over. Now my producer is in my ear telling me to shut up.”
  2. “They’ve got great team chemistry” (see also: “the intangibles”)
Almost always applied to the underdogs. There is no evidence whatsoever that, if such a thing exists, it makes much of a difference.
  3. “They have to come together as a team”
Usually said when a team isn’t playing well for many different reasons.
  4. “They know how to win” (Variant: “He knows what it takes to win”)
This one has always been a puzzler. It means, simply, they’ve won in the past. Next year, will someone please say, “They know how to lose”? Is it ever possible for a team to “know how to win,” but still be losers, simply because they don’t have the talent?
  5. “They have to generate some offense”
Yes we get it. Teams have to score to win games. But here’s a question: Can you “generate some defense”?
  6. “You can feel the electricity … “
This usually means the sportscaster saying the phrase has been given multiple shocks by his producer, telling him to shut the hell up and let listeners hear the crowd roar.
  7. “He’s got to step up now” (variant: “Somebody else has to step up now”)
If there were stats on this one the total usage would be over a zillion.
