Katie and I went to Toronto for the weekend, this is our story.

Friday

The journey began very early on Friday morning. The alarm clock went off at 6:15 am and it was time to get ready to start the journey west to Toronto. Katie and I got ready pretty fast and were packed and in the car by 7:15am. For those who do not know, Bosco was staying with a friend and he was dropped off on Thursday night. Mercy was going to tough it out by himself and enjoy some peace and quiet.

From the house to the airport everything went smooth. We had plenty of time to hit Tim Hortons and sit back and remember everything we forgot to bring.

Once on board we sat separate since I booked my ticket a few weeks after Katie. It was a full plane and I was in the very last row right up against the bathroom. The flight left a little early and went by very fast. I watched most of No Country For Old Men on Air Canada’s fancy entertainment console.

Highlights of the flight was seeing a man eat a cup of soup without a spoon. Okay he used a spoon but based on the wait he inhaled it I think the spoon only slowed him down.

Once we landed and got our bags we met Katie’s mom for a ride home. The city sure seems like it has grown and gotten a lot busier from the last time I went but I am sure it was not that different.

Once at the house it was time to wake up and have some food and start the whole adventure of the weekend.

Jamie as always set us up with some sandwiches that hit the spot.

Before we got started there was a small ceremony on the front porch where I was given my winnings for coming in second in the annual Rock Final Four pool. Dolla’ Bills.

The plan was for a somewhat lazy afternoon before Katie and I would go our separate ways out on the town that night.

We walked to the Danforth to enjoy the sun and to visit the Telus store. Katie is going to be doing a lot of driving for work and because Nova Scotia does not allow driving and talking on the phone, she wanted to pick up a blue tooth head set.

She looks very cool with it by the way.

Once home Katie had a nap and I did some surfing and chatting with Jamie before he had to do some work. The day was going pretty slow but I was not complaining.

Once the evening arrived it was time to get ready to hit the town. Katie was meeting up with her friends for a girls slumber party and I was meeting the guys for drinks. The plans had changed a little because close friends of Katie’s had a baby boy six weeks early and that added a lot of plan changing and excitement.

I ventured off to the west side of Toronto via the classic 504 King car. Took some photos as I rode and was amazed at the build up of condos and patios, even in the east end that used to look pretty sketchy.

Once at King and Dufferin I walked up to the Rhino to meet up with the guys and have some drinks.

Slow service, flat beer and good conversation were the features of this joint. The burger was good but not 45 minute wait good. The gang headed off to meet others and I headed off to meet up with some more friends, this time back east at Finn McCools.

First patio night of the year for me and it was great to catch up. Conversations felt like I never left and the beer was flowing nicely.

Around 2am the evening was closing down and my long day of travel was hitting me.

Back on the 504 and back up to Broadview and Danforth. I hit Pizza Pizza for a slice and headed back to the Rock hotel.

Funny story, Katie actually came home from her slumber party to enjoy an actual bed and was waiting on the porch as I walked around the corner. Apparently I looked very happy with pizza in my mouth although at this point I do not remember much.

Before much conversation could take place, I was upstairs and passed out on the bed and did not wake up until 5am feeling pretty bad and still in clothes. Just to let you know it is never a good idea to sleep on your wallet even if it is not full of dollar bills.

The end of the first day, the weekend is only just getting started.

Saturday

After waking up and finally brushing my teeth I tried to get back to sleep but failed. At this point of the early morning Katie had already moved due to my very loud snoring and she ended up in one of the other rooms downstairs.

My bad but that is what happens with a lot of beer and a dry room.

Seeing as I was already up I headed downstairs to see what was happening.

Jamie was up and invited me on his shopping trip to the St. Lawrence Market. I was pretty tired and out of it but the market is a great place to go at 9am.

It was sunny and warm and Toronto was alive.

We hit the market and as the expert Jamie attacked the place with a real plan. Get everything on his shopping list and get out before too many tourists came and clogged up the tables.

We did stop to have a back-bacon sandwich and by the way it was the best thing I have eaten this year. Wow it made me feel so much better as it soaked up all the booze from the night before. So good.

After all of the meat, veggies and cheese were picked up we headed home to see what was going on.

Katie was up checking some email and ready to start her day.

I had the plan of heading down to the ACC to see what they had at the store there. I wanted a Raptors shirt and I wanted to walk around town and soak it up. Walking up and down Yonge Street used to be one of my favourite things to do in Toronto and it did not disappoint.

I did some shopping, looked around and had some street meat. Halifax is very lacking in the street meat department so it really was a tasty treat.

Once home I was pretty tired so it was time to hit the basement and just watch hoops. I get feeling the need to doze but it kept passing as I watched the Suns blow a game they should of won. God damn Spurs.

That evening was the big birthday dinner party with all of Katie’s friends. It was supposed to start around 6:30 and it was after 5pm before Katie got home from her afternoon of shopping with the girls. Her friends bought her a great pair of jeans and Katie picked up a very nice top. As you will see in the pictures, she looked fabulous.

Dinner was spectacular and the night was a success.

Jamie made lamb on the grill, two kinds of bread, a potato salad, asparagus and a salad. There was a lot of food and it all tasted so good. I had seconds and thirds of course because I know how it hurts Jamie’s feelings if you only have one serving. Okay he does not get offended but he does love to see people enjoy the food.

Katie’s friends who had a baby earlier in the week made an appearance with pictures and all of the stories from the whole event. It was a bonus on an already great evening.

Then it was time for cake and candles and singing.

Casey made one of her famous trifles and if the dinner was great, the dessert was fantastic.

More laughing, cleaning up and drinks turned into a photo slide show in the basement. Thank God Jamie did not kick us all out while he tried to set everything up.

After pictures people started to leave and the say their good byes. Once the gang was all gone we finished cleaning up and before long it was time to crash again.

Another long day but another great one. Is there anything left in this Toronto weekend? You bet.

Sunday

The last day for me but Katie was staying until Tuesday.

Again up early but this time feeling much more alive. Had some breakfast and really did not do a lot until Katie got up.

It was game day so I was sporting my new Raptors shirt and very ready for the series to begin with the Magic.

Jamie had decided that we would have burgers and beer and watch the game. Perfect. The time came and everyone delivered……except the Raptors.

The food on my plate could of defended the three better than the Raps. The first quarter ended and I was pretty annoyed even with food in my belly.

Katie fell asleep as there was no real chance at a comeback. I know they cut the lead to five but did anyone think they would win? Yeah that game sucked.

After a bowl of leftover trifle Katie and I walked up to the Danforth to get some cash for my trip home and to soak up some Sunday afternoon sun. What a great weekend of weather.

We went back to the house, hung out and had a game of scrabble. Before long it was time for me to hit the road and to start my journey back to Halifax.

I am running out of steam here so I am going to bullet the trip home.

  • Fast ride to the airport, 15 minutes and the guy forgot to turn the meter on until we were going past the CN Tower. Score.
  • Grabbed a sandwich at the airport and tried not to sweat to death. Very muggy at gate 25.
  • Flight was late due to winter weather in Calgary.
  • Finally got off the ground and watched the Pistons get upset and the first half of the Celtics game while in the air.
  • Had the joke crew, it was an endless trip of jokes and chuckles.
  • A baby two rows back had poop vomit about three times. Smelled great.
  • Got on the ground, got my bag, got back to the car and was on the road just before midnight.
  • Picked Bosco up on the way home. Could not tell if he was happy to see me because he was so tired. Great work Sara.
  • Got home, gave the cat some food, had a beer and called it a night.

What a great trip. Got to see a lot of people, eat a lot of great food and got to spend the weekend with my girl on her birthday. Thanks to all.
