Thanks to the musical ear of a man simply known as Kyle, every week Cuzoogle will feature six songs/videos that you should check out. This week Kyle is liking the sounds of Mogwai, The Black Angels, Peeping Tom, New Young Pony Club, Grinderman of course his No. 1 pick.
Stop Apologizing Edition
6. Mogwai – “the single from the new album”, Mogwai are on tour right now, kicking ass and taking names. Yours truly is going to see them on June 30. The new album is rumoured to be called “The Howling of a Hawk” and this is supposed to be the first single. Listening to this makes me wish time would speed up because with hockey over, this is what I’m looking forward to.
5. The Black Angels – “Sniper at the Gates of Heaven”, These guys get compared to Spiritualized and The Doors a lot; they are my current favourite stoner rock band. They have appropriated a picture of Nico as their band logo, some people think it’s wrong to steal from Andy Warhol, I don’t and neither do the good people at Campbell’s.
4. Peeping Tom – “Getaway”, This is a collaboration created by Mike Patton of Faith No More fame and Dan the Automator. I’ve always liked Mike Patton, when I was in high school I had a big poster of Faith No More in their underwear on my wall. My mother did not care for this poster and used to throw laundry at it, in hopes that it would tear and fall down. The poster survived all her attempts.
3. New Young Pony Club – “The Bomb”, I’ve been listening to this band for a year or two now and somehow this single got past me. It’s probably a year old now, but new to me. Apparently the band name stems from the fact that the lead singer didn’t join any clubs in high school, so they formed this one.
2. Grinderman – “Honey Bee (Let’s Fly to Mars)”, This is an awesome Nick Cave side project, his solo stuff has the same energy as this, but the choice of backing instruments is just a bit more interesting here. Cave’s music under his own name is much more introspective and passionate, Grinderman seem to be about lust and grit.
1. Patrick Watson – “The Storm”, The Lansdowne crew love these guys and I have to admit I resisted for a while. I don’t care about buzz bands, hipsters or scenesters…I don’t really feel the need to apologize for what I like, even if it is really popular. These guys are good, case closed.
