Thanks to the musical ear of a man simply known as Kyle, every week Cuzoogle will feature six songs/videos that you should check out. This week Kyle is liking the sounds of The Brighton Port Authority, Octopus Project, Mates of State, Ladyhawk, The Hispital Bombers and of course his No. 1 pick.
Expecting the Unexpected Edition
6. The Brighton Port Authority – “Toe Jam”, This is David Byrne with Fatboy Slim and friends. It’s a great little summer road trip ditty. We are exploring nudity on the Pix now, so this video is pretty sweet.
5. Octopus Project – “Moon Boil”, I like “little indie bands that could”. These guys were basically fan voted in to Coachella, switch instruments in between sets and have their fans make their videos. This video is completely made up of “Public Domain” clips, which is a lawyer term for “free”.
4. Mates Of State – “My Only Offer”, Rarely does a band, whose music is being used in a cell phone commercial, actually appear in the commercial. Rarely would I consider this a good thing, but I want nothing but good things to happen to this band. Power Pop Represent!
3. Ladyhawk – “The Dug Out”, These guys were re-introduced to me at the North by Northeast Music Festival. I’d seen them months ago, but in the haze of many bands and many Moosehead, a few fall through the cracks. They introduce songs with great lines, like “For those of you who enjoy your rock ‘n’ roll soaked in alcohol…” This video is a little choppy, but it was filmed at the legendary Horseshoe!
2. The Hospital Bombers – “Debt Song”, This band was a NXNE discovery for me, they opened for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. They rocked pretty hard for a seemingly quiet band. This isn’t the best quality video in the world, but I still think they sound pretty good. It’s difficult to find their music because it seems that there are 3 bands with this moniker.
1.The Week That Was – “Scratch The Surface”, I stumbled across these guys by accident in my weekly search for new tunes. They sound heavily influenced by 80’s synth rock. If you like them at all, you should check out their MySpace, they remind me of every great John Hughes soundtrack.
