This past weekend while away at a cabin with friends, some classic board games came out and I had forgotten how fun they were. Yahtzee, scrabble and jenga were just three games that hit the table and that of course conjured up an idea for the blog. How would some of the oldest and most famous board games translate into the Toronto Raptors and their current state.

  • First up we have Jenga. You all know Jenga right, that tower building game. Each player in turn, removes one brick from anywhere below the highest complete storey and places it on the top of the tower, at right angles to the blocks immediately below it. A complete 3-block storey must be completed before starting another. Only one hand may be used at a time. The key is never pulling out any of the support pieces. So naturally in the Raptors case, if you try to pull out a Bosh or O’Neil, the tower or team will crumble to the floor. Pull out a Humphries and you can keep on building.

  • Next is one of my favourite games as a kid, Risk. Risk is of course the game of global domination and who better to be on the box than the Raptors President, Bryan Colangelo. He may not be winning everything in site but in terms of tapping the World market of players, few are doing more. The 2008 draft even saw BC stick a fork in the Aussie stock by drafting Nathan Jawai. You could also say that the O’Neil-Ford deal is a bit of a risk as well. Kind of like putting all of your armies in the Middle East and letting everyone attack you from all angles.

  • After doing the global thing, another game I enjoyed as a kid was Battle Ship. This one I did for the Arsenalist because so many times during last season he brought up and complained about Sam Mitchell’s poor offensive sets. Well this game may help explain how he comes up with the x’s and o’s. His play calling (minus that buzzer beater in Atlanta) is generally hit or miss wouldn’t you say?

  • What would this post be without a shot at everyone’s favorite former No. 1 pick out of Italy. I remember playing Clue growing up, where everyone would try and figure out who was the murderer. I swear it was always Colonel Mustard with a candlestick but maybe that is just my memory. The Raptors version would have to be Andrea Bargnani figuring out how to play in the NBA and live up to his potential. What I would not give to yell out “It was Andrea Bargnani with a dagger to the heart as the buzzer sounds.”

  • Finally if things don’t go well to start off the 2007-08 season, there is one person who will feel “Trouble” before anyone else. Yep you guessed it, SMitch. If BC is going to make the club better on paper, it is Mitchell’s job to make them better on the court. I can hear that popping sound of the bubble every time a game is lost that should of been won.

Any other games you can think of that relate to the Toronto Raptors, let us know. I am still working on an angle for The Game of Life, maybe the Raps need to win a title for that one to come full circle?
