Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on Monday in a contest marked by the spectacle of Miss USA falling down during the evening gown competition for the second year in a row. Staged? Maybe.
The new Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, was once kidnapped in her homeland and says the experience taught her to remain poised under pressure. She seemed calm, cool and collected until Springer said she won and it was time for the hysteria.
Here are the photos of Miss Venezuela (the favorite), the new Miss Universe.
The runner up was Miss Colombia.
The 2nd runner up was Miss Dominican Republic.
The 3rd runner up was Russia.
The 4th runner up was Miss Mexico.
Miss Thailand won the prize for best national costume.
Miss El Salvador was chosen by her peers as Miss Congeniality.
Tension got under the skin of Miss USA, Crystle Stewart of Texas, who tripped on the train of her bejeweled evening gown as she made her entrance.
Who do you think should of won?
Need more pageant goodness?
