Well the future name of the Oklahoma City NBA franchise has been narrowed down to six. In case you missed it they are as follows: Barons, Marshalls, Thunder, Wind, Energy and Bison. Okay so it could be a lot worse but none of those names really are that great. I have never been to Oklahoma so I have no idea which name actually represents the city that well. There is a rumour floating around that Barons is the front runner but to be honest they really need to trade for Baron Davis first.

If you think about it like you would when naming a kid, you have to avoid a name that can easily be mocked. For example if they team chooses the name “Wind”, there is going to a race to see what witty headline writer is going to use “Wind Blow Another Close One”. There will be references to passing wind and every other windy zinger that can be thought of.

If they choose Energy, there will be endless headlines of Energy crisis in Oklahoma City, or the team showed no Energy…..etc. At least there would be a good tie in with one lucky Energy drink.

Also think of what they can do for logos. How do you market wind? Do you just draw some motion lines on a jersey? How about one of those giant wind machines? Thunder is invisible to the eye so what do you design for that?

This is why I do think Barons will get the nod. You can have some historic dude with swords and a fancy hat or something like it. Then again if they choose Marshalls at least they should get a deal with this store.

I will say that I am pretty happy they did not go corporate and name the team after IKEA or something. You know it is going to happen one day when leagues and teams just sell their names to the highest bidders and we get franchises called the Oklahoma City Happy Meals or something.

I am sure any of the names will work out in the end, I mean I was shocked when Toronto ended up going with Raptors but now I actually like it.

Of the six what name do you like the best? Do you have any other suggestions? You never know, the NBA might see the light and change their mind.
