This week we continue to look ahead to the 2008-2009 season even though it is the summer. This is the second in a series of prediction threads where you can voice your opinions on what you think will happen once the season tips off.

Today’s topic (even though I said playoffs last week) is picking the season ending awards. Who will be MVP and Rookie of the Year etc.?

I’m curious, is this a website that is based in Portland,OR, because I see alot of post on here where people are predicting alot of players from the Trailblazers. Don’t get me wrong they are good but not that good. I will give them about 2-3 more years to become one of the elite teams in the west. But until then the Rockets, Lakers, Jazz, Hornets, Spurs, Mavs, Nuggets, and even the upcoming Clippers will maintian all of the spots in the west for the next few years to come.

Nick, your writing about your notice of the love for the blazers, but I notice you seem to be a Houston fan. You honestly think that T-Mac and Yao will make the NBA first team over Kobe and Dwight? I made my picks before the Artest trade and think now that Houston is the fav to come out the west, but I doubt that T-Mac wins MVP and I doubt that he and Yao make first NBA. I also don’t think that Yao will get the defensive first nod over Dwight Howard. But it’s your opinion against mine and I respect yours.

Hey Derek that’s cool, I understand where you are coming from I’m a true fan to Houston like you are to Portland. I am a Houston fan, but that is not why I picked T-Mac and Yao over Kobe and Howard. I already knew that they would get Artest since last season, I watched every game and followed the team. and he also streesed his desire to play for coach RA, because he said that is the best coach he has ever played for. Now since they have him in Houston this will make T-Mac’s job alot easier, which will improve his stats on defense and offense as far as assist and rebounding. His scoring will go up too, because Artest is a playmaker also, who will create more open looks for T-Mac, that will take his game to the next level, which will result in him getting MVP honors. I picked Yao over Howard because he is starting to become a more physical player and his blocks are starting to increase as well and once again they have Artest who can play defense in the low post which will take pressure off of Yao and allow him to roam freely. When I once played ball our coach use to tell us that offense wins games and defense wins championships, well they now have 3 of the best defenders in the league (Yao, Battier, and Artest). I like to give credit where credit is due, yes Portland is developing into a nice young team and if they stay together they will be a contender in 3-4 years, but right now with the talent, depth, and veteran experience Houston has, they are definetly on their way to the Finals and I noticed yopu agreed with me on that, but lets keep in mind that T-Mac has never had two great players on his team before like Kobe or Nash did or even Dirk, that could hep him become an MVP. And just like you said Derek, you feel that the Rockets will come out of the West, which is true however, the only way they will do it is with T-Mac carrying them on his back to the playoffs like he does every year, but this year he will have more veteran help with Artest and Barry which will lead him to MVP honors.

Hey Nick, I hear you and understand where your coming from. I can definately see T-Mac being in the top three or four of the MVP voting, if not the MVP. I am a big T-Mac fan myself. I am actually a Magic fan. I think it was one of the biggest of the boneheaded moves the Magic made by trading him to you guys. As far as Yao, it is one of those I have to see it to believe it kind of things. To be that big, he has always played too soft. I think his lack of aggression is what caused you guys to lose to the Jazz in 2007 playoffs. The love for Dwight may be biased, but I just feel he is a better all around center than Yao. I have Dwight as my pick for the MVP, but like I said, my choice could be a biased one. We’ll see how it goes this season. I cant wait for the season to start, I’m tired of watching baseball.
