Thanks to the musical ear of a man simply known as Kyle, every week Cuzoogle will feature six songs/videos that you should check out. This week Kyle is featuring Saul Williams, Archive, Vashti Bunyan, The Breeders, Grizzly Bear and of course his No. 1 pick.

Off the Grid Edition

6. Saul Williams – “Convict Colony”, The Pix loves Saul. He provides attitude and ego with a message. There’s been talk lately of him selling out, but if you take the time to listen to his lyrics, he responds to those accusations. I can’t wait for him to tour again…

5. Archive – “Again”, These guys have been around for a really long time, but have yet to make it big this side of the pond. They’re huge in France and have been all over the BBC too. The first version of this track I heard was about fifteen minutes long and the Pink Floyd influence is pretty evident. This obviously isn’t an official video, but it fits as far as I’m concerned.

4. Vashti Bunyan – “Train Song”, Listen to this track and think of what you would use it to advertise in a commercial. I asked some people what they would assume it would be good for; people said cars, furniture or insurance. The surprising thing is that it’s being used in a Reebok NFL commercial. Look it up, it’s pretty good. Strongs likes it!

3. The Breeders – “Walk it Off”, With a song title like this, I’d expect it to be dance hall worthy. But, no, it’s vintage Breeders…right down to the jangly bass riff. I’ll always love the Breeders and if you have the attention span, this video isn’t bad either.

2. Grizzly Bear – “Two Weeks”, I love whoever it is who picks the bands of Letterman; they’re not afraid to make risky choices. These guys are amazing live, they’re opening for Radiohead, and so if you scored tix…you’re in for a treat.

1.Clinic – “Tomorrow”, This is catchy and understated at the same time, which is difficult to do in a pop song. This track, paired up with an artsy video, is quite hypnotic. I love having this in the background while I read; it’s particularly good with Don DeLillo. If you haven’t read him, I would suggest “White Noise”. Maybe I should blog about books and appropriate companion albums next. We’ll see…
