Cockiness and immaturity. Two things I displayed on Friday night after stumbling home to crow about Temple’s win over Army.
You know who else let cockiness be his downfall? Apollo fuckin’ Creed, that’s who. The way he bounced around during his James Brown intro before meeting Ivan Drago, I wouldn’t be the least surprised if he was riding the booze train too.
As for immaturity, I look to Dean Youngblood, who assumed that sheer talent would be enough to survive the next step up in the hockey world.
Well, Apollo ended up stone-cold dead, Youngblood ended up blaming himself for his friend’s career-ending brain pain and I ended up 2-4.
So fuck me and the liquor I rode home on Friday night. On to Week 2 with a humbled heart. Again, I’m using Pinnaclesports.com numbers from Tuesday night.
Georgia Tech at Boston College, Saturday, noon ET: Georgia Tech +7
For the record, I’ve harboured an anti-Boston sports bias for years. Love the city, hate the teams. But when it comes to betting, I’ve harnessed my hatred pretty well. So take me at my word when I say I like Tech on Saturday.

I know, BC had a killer run defense last year and Tech is doing naught but running under Paul Johnson. And yeah, the Eagles smoked the Jackets in Atlanta last year. But fuck that - I’m taking GT with the points. Who’s with me?!? Boston College sucks, I swear.
Connecticut at Temple, Saturday, noon ET: Temple +7
I don’t like repeating picks from the previous week, as it’s monotonous if a fella does nothing but ride winners. That said, Temple’s an underrated squad and I’m just not buying UConn to match last year’s magic.
Maybe it’s the narrow wins last year, maybe it’s the absolutely shite Week 1 performances by fellow Big East middle-of-the-packers Pitt, Louisville and Rutgers… but I ain’t touching the Huskies until I’m sure they won’t bite.
Oregon State at Penn State, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET: Penn State -16
I end up hating one quarterback per season because he’s not good enough to lift a better-than-average team to the level it deserves. Two years ago it was Reggie Ball at Georgia Tech. Last year it was Anthony Morelli at Penn State.

Congrats, Nits, you’re free to live up to the hype now that Morelli’s gone. Besides, the Beavers, who I’d otherwise support as a loyal Canuck, are a shell of last year’s squad.
Tulsa at North Texas, Saturday, 7 p.m. ET: Tulsa -21 ½
I don’t care this game’s in Denton as opposed to Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane offense is the envy of many a bowl-bound school from BCS conferences. I also don’t care about Tulsa’s lack of top-notch defense, seeing as Todd Dodge’s reclamation project at North Texas isn’t ready for the prime time yet.
Tulsa’s cracking 50 points on Saturday. Can North Texas approach 30? I’m not seeing it.
Maryland at Middle Tennessee State, Saturday, 7 p.m. ET: Middle Tennessee State +13 ½
Is this pick a reaction to the Sun Belt’s improvement in recent years or the ACC shitting the bed on Saturday? I’ll admit it - a little bit of both. I eyed this game during the summer as a potential upset straight-up and Maryand’s Week 1 squeaker over Joe Flacco-less Delaware didn’t convince me of anything special going on in Terpsland.
So fuck it. MTSU is inexperienced, but the Blue Raiders have a good record in recent years of knocking unsuspecting visitors for a loop. Making a suspect ACC squad lay nearly two touchdowns in the process is just adding fuel to the fire.
Miami at Florida, Saturday, 8 p.m. ET: Miami +21 ½
If nothing else, the N.C. State and Clemson Week 1 bed-shitters against SEC schools pushed this line past three touchdowns, which might be a bit high considering Miami’s team speed.

I mean shittiness aside, isn’t it about time the Hurricanes stopped embarrassing themselves and actually grew a pair? I’m banking on it (knowing full well that a two-touchdown loss will no doubt constitute an “impressive loss” for Miami).
