Digg is more like Rigg

This is just a quick rant about today’s events. Just after dinner I went to access my Digg account and found I was unable to. No email, no warning, just locked out of my account that I have worked so hard on building. I was just starting to notch some valuable Populars and then the ban. Why do you ask?

Using scripts. Not movie scripts but handy little pieces of code that should make life better. I totally admit to using Firefox scripts that increase speed of digging and helping build up a solid name but everyone else uses them so I figured why not. All the so-called experts pretty much tell you to.

A few weeks ago there was word that Digg was cracking down. So I stopped using them. They are still installed and they help me see what stories I have already dugg but that was it. I was playing by the rules as best I could.

So it really was a pisser to find out today I was cut from the team, never to be let back in. Then I find out pretty much everyone I know who is on Digg is also getting canned. Great, a mass purge of people who use the site and help it grow. Now there will be the super Diggers and a bunch of people who don’t get it.

Now this mass banning would be all fine and dandy if the same rules applied to everyone. Are the giants of the Digg world getting banned for using scripts? Does not look like it. They are what keeps the site so popular so why would Digg get rid of them.

The whole concept of Digg is to get the best news to the front based on what people think. But what it has become is a market owned by a group of people who control what gets to the front because they have the biggest following and the most Diggs. Sure some articles squeak by that get submitted by the small timers (Cuzoogle has made it there three times) but for the most part, what the Digg Bosses submit, goes popular. See the double standard?

Those who use Digg want to get their submissions to the front page because it really feels like a game, so like any community you follow those who are doing just that. You Digg a lot, I mean a lot and build up the friends and start to figure it out and see that you can aslo start to have some power. Oh but wait, we don’t get to follow the same rules to help us reach that status. We get cut off at the knees just when we get a taste of how the game is played.

When it is all said and done maybe it is a positive. Hours of time will be given back to our lives and there will no longer be this Digg drama as if we were a FOX series. There is always room over at Reddit or Stumble Upon. They don’t have such a strict dress code.

I will warn you now, if you want to keep your Digg account alive, grab the kids, hide in the basement and get rid of those scripts. Digg is coming for you and he is pissed.

You have been warned.
