Over the last few weeks we have been trying to really take a look at the NBA and basketball in general on a grander scale and focus on the culture known as “The Brotherhood.” A few weeks ago we posted about the new campaign from adidas that shows basketball as one giant club or family that does not look at team names or where you are from but just at the actual game that we all love.

Last night we happened to catch an interview with Chauncey Billips talking about what it was like after he heard about the trade to Denver and how it affected himself and his Piston teammates. He said it was incredibly hard on Rip Hamilton and that they spent two hours together talking about the deal and how it was two hours he will never forget.

The one comment he made that was pretty powerful was that in the big picture nothing would change from a standpoint of friendship because they are all part of a Brotherhood. Billups and Hamilton will be playing on two separate teams and go off on totally different paths but at the core of it all nothing changes for their friendship. There are numerous examples of this in the NBA and on every level of hoops. It is not about what team you play on or where you play, it is about the friends and relationships that are formed from basketball that you keep for life.

This message to us is a big part of the campaign and commercials currently airing for adidas. They don’t showcase one player with glitz and glamour, they instead try to show NBA stars as the friends they are and the role models they are to young kids.

This commercial is a pretty fitting one that shows how all of these high profile NBA players love to spend time together and have fun and put all of the intense competition aside.

We know you have seen all of those short ads showing NBA stars building up teams of young people and getting ready for a game. What are your thoughts? Does it paint the big name players in a different light? Or do you just see them as vessels for selling shoes?

The Brotherhood is real in basketball and we just wanted to share the example of Billups and the Pistons to really bring that message home.

Also check out our weekly NBA Power Rankings that feature a Brotherhood team of the week.

Keep an eye out for your chance to win some cool adidas gear in the near future.
