Former Toronto Raptor and fan favourite Matt Bonner has started his application for Canadian citizenship and hopes to play for the Canadian Men’s National Team.
Born in New Hampshire, Bonner spent two years living in Toronto while playing for the Raptors and was immediately embraced by the city and the team’s fans.
It was a common occurrence to see Bonner walking or taking the subway on his way to the Air Canada Centre. Many Raptors fans and NBA bettings enthusiasts were sorry to see Matt leave town in a 2006 trade to Sacramento, but the move was a positive one for the player, as he would have seen his minutes drastically reduced with the addition of Anthony Parker, Jason Kapono and Andrea Bargnani.
While his talents were not appreciated in Toronto, Canada could certainly use his experience and skill on the National Team. Ranked 19th in the world, the team is fresh from a disappointing summer where they failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games.
Bonner’s wife is from Toronto, and he has stated “I feel very strongly about representing Canada. I feel like I’m part Canadian. It just feels right.”
If his application for citizenship is accepted, and he is eligible to play for the Canadian National team, it would be a great opportunity for Raptor fans to see the “Red Rocket” wearing red once more.
