Why and when do backboards shatter?
Well, it’s an interesting question - and you’ve probably noticed it happens much less often than it used to.
The reason for this is because most NBA and NCAA systems are made out of tempered glass, which is very difficult to shatter. Hoops that shatter easily are usually made out of acrylic glass, which is 4-6 times less tough than tempered glass.
And interestingly, acrylic backboards play quite a bit differently than tempered glass. If you’re trying to replicate an NBA or NCAA system, it’s worth knowing that acrylic backboards tend to get scuffed quite easily, and once they’re scuffed it’s very difficult to remove the blemishes.
With Tempered glass, you get a much better bounce from the backboard, and it stays looking quite nice. Of course, the there is a tradeoff in price.
Tempered glass tends to be more expensive than acrylic, but if you’re trying to create an NBA like system, 1/2 thick tempered glass is the way to go.
