It hasn’t been the best week for quite a few No. 1 picks in the NBA Draft – a triumvirate in the headlines for the wrong reasons and another admitting to visiting a psychiatrist to try and sort his head out before the start of the season.
Worst news of the lot came in Houston where Yao Ming’s season was ended even before it started thanks to surgery on a foot injury that hampered him for long spells last year.
Without Ron Artest in town as well, and with Tracy McGrady still there (not sure which one of those is worse for Rockets fans) they could prove to be the big flops of next season, maybe even forcing themselves into the lottery on the back of a team led by the Always Hurt One and the game’s next big thing…errr…. Trevor Ariza?
But you do have to feel sorry for them really – the Rockets have never really done anything to upset anyone – unlike the Clippers who deserve everything they get for still allowing Donald Sterling the chance to own a team which should be outstanding but will always fail.
On paper (again) basketball betting suggests they should have an excellent chance at success (again) this season, but (again) their collection of over-inflated egos will (again) internally combust and lead to the team breaking up (again).
Seriously, who would be disappointed to see their team trot our Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Al Thornton, Blake Griffin and Marcus Camby as a starting five, with Chris Kaman and the detritus from the trade with Minnesota last week coming off the bench?
Well it seems now fans might have to wait a little bit longer to see Griffin, although there is still hope he will be 100% fit for the start of the season after a shoulder strain he suffered in the Summer League.
He had performed well enough in Vegas to give Clippers supporters a sight of what they can expect in real games, but this injury just shows how thin a line these big guys tread as they look to avoid a rookie season like Greg Oden’s, Andrea Bargnani’s or any season that Michael Olowokandi played.
And the third one? Well LeBron (you know, the guy who got dunked on a few weeks back…or was he?) admits he smoked pot when in high school…
