DeMarco Murray’s season is over after the promising Dallas Cowboys running back suffered a broken right ankle during the narrow 37-34 defeat to the New York Giants.

The 23-year-old was seen leaving the stadium on crutches with his right foot in a black protective boot after picking up the injury with 4:54 left in the first quarter of Sunday night’s game.

“We’re extremely disappointed,” said the Cowboys’ offensive line coach and running game co-ordinator Hudson Houck.

“I feel sorry for him. He’s such a competitor.”

Murray’s injury leaves Dallas with a problem as, although Felix Jones will return to the team, Phillip Tanner was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list last week. Anyone following the Super Bowl odds will be wondering how they will cope with these absences.

The Cowboys may look to bring in a new player as cover although they do have recent acquisition Chauncey Washington as an alternative.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen,” Houck added. “We’ll have to sit down and talk about it. We have other guys who have to step up and do the job obviously.”

Murray has enjoyed a fine first season with Dallas following his arrival from Oklahoma Sooners on a four-year contract worth almost $3million.

He started the season as the third-choice running back behind Jones and Tashard Choice but, when Jones picked up an ankle injury in the Week 6 game against the New England Patriots, Murray seized his chance.

Murray ran for 253 yards on 25 carries in the Week 7 clash with the St Louis Rams before making the first NFL start of his career in the next game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

He again impressed and kept his place in the starting line-up for the Seattle Seahawks game, running 139 yards on 22 carries, and continued his rich vein of form until Sunday’s unfortunate injury.
