Recently at a party with friends, a bbq sauce that we have heard of so many times became available to take home.

It is called Wood Sauce and it is made locally in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Now as a lover of all things bbq, I was skeptical about someone making their own sauce and having friends and family raving about it.

The first time I got to try it was just as a dip with some pepperoni. But that is all it took for me to be hooked. It is not super hot but it has a great flavour that will go with just about anything.

Since bringing home a jar, we have used it as a dip with chicken fingers, in homemade chili and most recently as the glaze on meatloaf. By the way, meatloaf has never tasted so good.

We also had this recipe (or at least close to it) at a Christmas dinner.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches

1-2kg Pork Shoulder

1 jar Wood Sauce (500ml)

2-3 medium-sized white or yellow onions

Dill pickle slices

Onion Buns

Place the pork shoulder in a slowcooker, add sliced onions and then cover with delicious Wood Sauce. Slow cook for about 6 hours. Your place should be smelling real good right about now. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place on a cookie sheet (this is just to keep the juices contained). With a pair of forks, one in each hand, pull (shred) the pork. The technique may take a bit of time to master, but the pork should be falling apart anyway. Return it to the slow cooker and simmer for a bit longer. Use a pair of tongs to grab the pulled pork so that you can squeeze out as much or as little juice as you’d like. Slap it on a bun and add a few dill pickle slices…. pure pulled pork paradise.

As our first jar is running low, we will no doubt be after more and have a list of friends and family that we want to get a bottle for.

The creator has some Kansas City roots which makes him legit in the bbq world and even though it is a hobby or sorts, this sauce has the potential to be quite popular.

First Halifax, then the world. That is why I am sharing this sauce with you today. I am pretty sure you can order it to be shipped just about anywhere and I hope one day it is accessible to the masses.

Read more about wood sauce and all the recipes you can do with it on the Wood Sauce website.

Also as a promise to the creator, here is a photo of someone who I bet loves wood sauce.

Go get some Wood Sauce for yourself Padma.
