Spurs lose, Ginobili breaks hand. Certainly not how San Antonio fans wanted to start 2012.

Just before halftime of an eventual loss to the Timberwolves (double ouch), Ginobili slapped down hard with his left hand in an attempt to strip the ball from Anthony Tolliver’s hands. No dice. Just a broken left hand.

A serious injury was the last thing on anyone’s mind, but what the Spurs got was the worst outcome possible: a fractured fifth metacarpal on Ginobili’s shooting hand that likely will keep their top scorer this season on the sidelines for a number of weeks.

Now let me recall how the Spurs have done in the past without Manu? Yes, I think it falls under the category of not very good.

The two-time All-Star is to be re-examined by the Spurs’ medical staff today, after which a timeline for his return will be determined. James Anderson would move into the starting spot at shooting guard until Ginobili returns.

I don’t see this going well for the Spurts, especially in a short season and a very powerful Western Conference. Oh well, I have been wanting the Spurs to go away for some time, maybe this is the year?
