Alex Ovechkin has certainly done his hopes of winning a third Hart Trophy as NHL MVP no harm with a sensational scoring run, with his latest goal coming in the Washington Capitals 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
The Capitals are 5-0-0 in April and Ovechkin has eight goals during that winning run. The centre on his line, Nicklas Backstrom, picked up two assists and has 11 points, in the same five games.
If Washington can keep up this level of performance, there will not be many teams keen on facing them by the time the play-offs get underway.
“It’s big two points for us right now. We beat a team in front of us (in the standings),” Ovechkin said to the NHL betting news.
“We know we can play against good teams. If we play hard and play our system it gives us results.”
Ovechkin has played a key role in leading the Capitals back up to third in the Eastern Conference and top of the Southeast Division, and if the Russian star can maintain his current form then there is nothing stopping Washington from really challenging in the play-offs.
With 26 goals and 44 points to his name, Ovechkin has now put himself in real contention to challenge Sidney Crosby for this season’s Hart Trophy, despite the Penguins star seemingly the favourite among fans betting on NHL. Ovechkin’s 44 points entering are sixth-best in the league and 12 behind injured leader Crosby.
After sitting down in 54th-place at the beginning of Match, when the explosive Russian had a modest 15 points, being within touching distance of the league leader shows just how well Ovechkin has played over the past month and how important he is to the Capitals’ plans this season.
